Position Title: Desktop Publisher

Reports to: Director of Language Research Center (LRC)

Position Overview:

The successful candidate will format bilingual manuscripts such as dictionaries, textbooks, readers, and handbooks for hardback publication.  In addition, these books will be converted to electronic formats for soft-copy publications. The successful candidate will also be responsible for coordinating the production of publications with commercial printing companies. 

Qualifications:

Experience with MS WORD, Adobe Writer, Adobe Illustrator, and similar desktop publishing software.

Proven ability to format hard and soft copy texts for commercial publications.

Experience with non-Roman language text processing (fonts, etc.).

Knowledge of non-Roman language text encoding issues (sorting, etc.).

Knowledge of UNICODE as applies to foreign languages.

Experience with text encoding (XML, SMGML).

Expertise with standard computer operating systems (PC and Macintosh) and networking.

Experience with computer setup and general technical support. 

Additional Information

Desk Top Publisher Under general supervision, responsible for producing computer-generated graphic-design for communication materials. Creates graphic images and integrates text. Requires in-depth knowledge and training in desktop publishing applications (e.g., PageMaker, InDesign, Quark, Illustrator, etc.). Operates digital scanner and edits graphic images. Capable of manipulating text and graphics to accommodate a wide range of design specifications. A Bachelor's degree in an applicable technical field or equivalent experience, excellent written communication skills, and two to four years of technical writing and copy editing experience are required and experience in specialized training in desktop publishing software. 

Education and/or Experience

Preferred Bachelor of Science degree from four-year college or university in computer science, professional certification in desktop publishing, or significant experience in publication development.
